This wonderful example of Trench Art from the Great War (1914 - 1918) has been beautifully hand etched and engraved around the entire, very heavy, large shell casing with the soldiers name, rank, unit, badges and names of various French towns and battles. Along the top is a wreath of flowers and leaves. The front reads '1914 FRANCE 1919' 'LT. A.N.G. CARSWELL' 'R.F.A. 38 TRENCH MORTAR BATTERY.' The back has a large engraved scroll with the words or names of various French battles: 'ARMENTIERS' 'YPRES' 'DICKEBUSCH' 'ALBERT' 'GOUZECOURT' 'VILLERS-OUTREUX' 'LE-CATEAU' 'ENGLEFONTAINE' 'FOREST DE MORMAL' 'WATTIGNE AU VIKTOIR'. On either side of this are large, engraved badges the 'Royal Field Artillery' cap badge and the other of a dragon, which I think refers to 'THE BUFFS' (East Kent Regiment). On the base of this large shell are the following letters and numbers: 'MGM, 569L, 17, SD, 155 C, MLE, 1915, S.' It measures 24.5cm in height, with a diameter of 16.7cm and weighs a heavy 4.5kg's.
