This is another wonderful example of Trench Art from the Great War (1914 - 1918) and is very similar to another Trench Art piece I listed earlier by the same soldier. The brass artillery shell has been beautifully hand etched and engraved around the entire, very heavy, large shell casing with the soldier's name, rank, unit, badges and names of various French towns and battles. Along the top is a wreath of flowers and leaves. The front reads '1914 FRANCE 1919' 'LT. A.N.G. CARSWEL' 'R.F.A. 38 TRENCH- MORTAR-BATTERY. The back has a large engraved scroll with the words or names of various French battles: 'ERQUINHAM' 'MERVILLE' 'GIVENCHY' 'AVELUY-WOOD' 'LA-BOISELLE' 'BAZENTIN-LE-GRAND' 'DELVILLE WOOD' 'GINCHY' 'MORVAL' 'SAILLY-SAILLY-SEL' 'POIX DU NORD.' On either side of this are large, engraved badges the 'Royal Field Artillery' cap badge and the other of a dragon, which I think refers to 'THE BUFFS' (East Kent Regiment). On the base of this large shell are the following letters and numbers: 'PX, 35L, 175, 155 C, MLE, 1915, Schneider, CP.' It measures 24.8cm in height, with a diameter of 16.8cm and weighs a heavy 4.7kgs.
