WWI pair to a Military Medal winner: Sjt W C Pearce (MM) 1st SAI
William Pearce enlisted in the 1st SA Infantry at Potchefstroom on 9 Dec 1915 but was only posted to his unit in France in August 1916. His Military Medal was gazetted in the London Gazette of 9 July 1917.
The original recommendation by 2/Lt J C Scheepers reads as follows: “This stretcher bearer was indefatigable during the operations of 9th April, E of ARRAS. In the attack E of FAMPOUX on 12th April he worked under heavy MG fire until the early hours of 13th April to get in all the wounded. This soldier has now been with the regiment throughout and has done continuous good work, regardless of danger”.
Pearce was wounded on 27 March 1918, resulting in a composite fracture of the left thigh. He died the same day after being brought to the 13th Australian Field Ambulance. His campaign medals were only claimed in September 1934
