WWI Pair to Cpl. W. Jansen S.A.M.C.
William Jansen’s pre-war occupation was Police Corporal stationed on Robben Island. He attested in the SA Medical Corps at the end of August 1915 and embarked for North Africa on 17 October 1915. Up north he contracted German Measles and was hospitalised from 20 January to 12 February 1916 in No 2 General Hospital at Alexandria.
In April 1916 he was posted to the 1st SA Field Ambulance in Flanders, probably serving as stretcher-bearer. He died of multiple gunshot wounds to the head and body on 14 April 1918, possibly after being wounded the previous day at the end of the South African retreat from Messines Ridge. He left a wife and three young children.
