A Pair of First World War Medals and a War Services Badge to Robert Walter Purves of the 4th (Scottish) South African Infantry and subsequently the South African Heavy Artillery.
This sale comes with copious documentation copied from the archives. Some, confirming the awards, are in the images.
From these documents it can be gathered that Purves attested with the 4th SAI in 1915 at the age of 28. He was a postman in Pietermaritzburg, married with three children. He was sent to France in July 1916 and fought with his regiment during the Battle of the Somme. On 24th October 1916 he received numerous shrapnel wounds at High Wood (2 miles from Delville Wood). He was invalided back to England for treatment and convalescence and eventually discharged back in South Africa in early in 1918. He re-attested later that year with the South African Heavy Artillery and was discharged some months later in 1919.
