Full medal group to John Dennis Howard Harding. 1939/45 STAR/Italy STAR/WM/ASM - correctly named to J.D.H Harding No.103790. Attested into the SAAF 1940 and later went on to fly with the RAF attached to 154 Squadron and then 92nd Squadron - well known for their participation during the Dunkirk evacuation and the Battle of Britain. In 1943 they formed part of No. 244 and the No. 211 (Offensive Fighter) Group and were equipped with Supermarine Spitfires MK VIII. On 15.06.1944, operating near Littorio, Harding was among four spitfires that were involved in sorties over the Citta Pieve, Arezzo, Cortona and Perugia areas. Whilst attacking and straffing a bus, Harding's plan was hit by anti-aircraft fire causing him to spin in from 8000 feet and crash. He was killed and on recovering his body - he was laid to rest in the Assisi War Cemetery - staying true to his Squadrons motto - Aut pugna aut morere - Either fight or die. By the end of the war, 92nd Squadron had claimed the highest number of victories scored in the RAF.  Group is sold with photograph of the HDS, service papers and copies of the Operations Record Book pertaining to 92nd Squadron and the action on that fateful day. No overseas bidders please.
