Yellowstone in Photo-Gravure
Published by F. Jay Haynes, St. Paul (no date; 1891?)
Images taken by F. Jay Haynes (Frank Jay Haynes, 1853-1921) professional photographer from Minnesota who became the official photographer for the Northern Pacific Railway and Yellowstone National Park.
This item consists of 25 black-and-white photogravure plates printed on card, housed in an olive-green folder with cloth hinges. The titles to each plate are listed on the underside of the main flap, the ribbon/clasp of which is missing (see image).
Condition: all 25 plates are present and in very good condition as a result of the quality of the card on which they are printed, plus the loose tissue guards which have helped preserve each one throughout their lifespan; plate 14 (Gardiner Canyon) is the only one affected by foxing, the card borders and part of the image itself being spotted. The thick cardboard folder is in good condition internally, though externally it is showing fading/browning, splash marks on the upper side (bottom side much better) and some fraying of the right side edges.
The date of this set is not stated, so may be as early as 1887 or a later edition printed in 1890/1 or later.
