This jambiya (or janbiya) dagger is a traditional dagger found primarily in Yemen and other Arabic countries. The rustic, double-edged blade bears a slight curvature, and is protected by its original asib-type scabbard characterized by a sharp upcurve. The scabbard is adorned with silver mounts, the intricacy of which typically signify social status, as well as bands of leather. The hilt (handle) is carved of wood and features rustic metal accents. This fascinating dagger is a both a weapon as well as a status and cultural symbol, worn primarily by men starting at the age of 14. Though most often seen being worn on the front of the body and secured by a sash, the name is believed to derive from the word "janb" meaning "on the side."
