To effectively run this standby power supply an automatic transfer switch is needed. It must be large enough to handle the power and current the generators will produce. In the case of a power outage it will automatically start the generator and when it is running at constant speed it will switch the power from the mains supply to the standby supply. At the same time it will isolate the mains power from the system so that there is no feedback on the line. When the mains power is restored the automatic transfer switch will turn off the generators and reconnect to the mains supply.

Whether there is an operator on duty or not the automatic transfer switch will turn the generators on and transfer the power into the system and when power is resumed it will turn off the generator and change the power source.
