AND SINCE MADEIRA WINES IS WITHOUT DOUBT THE LONGEST LASTING WINES PRODUCED YOU WILL STILL BE ABLE TO DRINK HISTORY IF YOU CHOOSE TO ENJOY THIS BOTTLE.
JUDGED BY SIMILAR VINTAGE BOTTLES SOLD ONLINE AND BY THE SHAPE OF THE DECADES OLD WICKER CAPSULE (STOPPED AROUND 1980) AND HANDLE AND EVEN THE 75CTS PRICE (AMAZING WHAT MADEIRA WINE COST IN 1890) THIS BOTTLE CAN BE ANYTHING FROM 40 YEARS (1980) TO A 140 YEARS (1880) OLD. MY ESTIMATE IS CIRCA 1940-1960. THERE SHOULD BE MORE MARKINGS UNDERNEATH THE WICKER CAPSULE THAT IS FOR THE BUYER TO DISCOVER.
If you were drinking Cape wine two centuries ago whether in Cape Town, New York or London statistically, the likeliest is that youd be enjoying a Madeira wine bottle that a merchant had sold to you. The wines of Madeira, the small Portuguese island in the north Atlantic, had great fame back then.
It had been discovered that heat (notably the effects of long, turbulent voyages to the east in the holds of ships, but also natural heating at home) had a remarkable effect on their quality, and also rendered them virtually indestructible. The Portuguese island of Madeira lies in the Atlantic Ocean, 1000 kilometers miles southwest of Lisbon, and some 500 km west of Morocco. Since the 16th century Madeira has also been the name of the islands most famous product, a fortified wine known for its aging potential.
This wicker wine bottle on sale was sealed with a decades old wicker capsule. The wicker capsule is composed of a partially woven top which covers the cork with wax seal and opening of the bottle and a single piece, spiral wound around the top of the neck. The end of the spiral is tucked into itself. It may be unwound. It is not clear when bottles were first sealed with a wicker capsule but some shippers did use them widely. The practice faded out by the 1980s.
Many wicker bottles produced between 1937 and 1979 bear a Junta Nacional do Vinho da Madeira (JNC) paper seal under the capsule but since I do not want to break open the capsule this is for the buyer to discover. MARKINGS: HAS A CLASSICAL PORTUGUESE 5 TOWER COAT OF ARMS LABEL ON NECK AND AN OLD LABEL ON ONE SIDE THAT READS FLUID CONTENT 75CTS. THE LARGE LABEL ON ONE SIDE ONLY HAS SOME REMNANTS LEFT. UNDER THE WICKER CAP SHOULD BE MORE MARKINGS BUT THAT IS FOR THE BUYER TO DISCOVER.
SIZE: ITS IS 15,5CM IN WIDTH AND 23,5CM HIGH AND 8,5CM IN DEPTH
CONDITION: BOTTLE IS FULL AND UNOPENED. WICKER CONDITION VERY GOOD. WICKER CAP AND WAX SEAL IN TACT. MAIN FRONT LABEL IS MISSING. STILL HAS THE PORTUGUESE COAT OF ARMS LABEL ON NECK AND A LABEL ON OTHER SIDE.
MADEIRA WINE THE SEAFARERS WINE: Madeira was an important port for passing ships on the trade routes to the new world mainly Americas and India. Madeira wines were taken on board as provisions and brandy was added to each barrel of wine to improve its keeping qualities during the long sea voyages. The heat of the ship's hold was found to have dramatically improved the wines, making them richer and more complex, as well as making them stable and capable of ageing almost indefinitely. While most bottles of wine can last years unopened, they will eventually break down. But due to its unusual heating and aging process, an unopened bottle of Madeira wine can last hundreds of years. Even when you open it, Madeira can last for months and even years. Madeira wines are without doubt the longest lasting quality wines produced.
A vintage Madeira can last for centuries, and then once opened the wine can be enjoyed, re-stoppered and stored for over a year without deterioration. Even today, you can buy bottles of Madeira from 1850s and even older. HISTORICAL PRICES OF MADEIRA WINE:
