THOMAS LAWRENCE (1769-1830): Thomas Lawrence (the painter of The Red Bouy, Miss Murray and Pinkie) was one of the most popular portrait artists of his day and a favorite of the royal courts. He worked constantly and consistently, but to the puzzlement of those around him, was always in debt. Throughout his career he continually relied on financial support from benefactors and loans from his friends and left little fortune when he died.
MISSS MURRAY: Sir Thomas Lawrences famous portrait depicts Louisa Georgina Augusta Anne Murray (18221891) as a young girl aged 3 to 5. She joyfully skips towards us, presenting a skirt full of freshly picked flowers. Her wide eyes and rosy cheeks immediately indicate a sense of innocent childhood joy. This painting has become one of the most reproduced images of a British child, appearing on numerous biscuit tins and chocolate boxes. At the time it was painted, it was well known that Miss Murray was the goddaughter (a female child one sponsors at baptism and promises to bring up in the Christian faith) of the military commander and Prime Minister Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington a fact that likely increased the paintings popularity.
