ZAR Brieven van Naturalisatie voor het Volle Stemrecht, signed by Dr. W. J. Leyds
1897, Letter of Naturalisation and Full Voting Rights, for Bernard Joseph Bartels, signed by the State Secretary of the South African Republic (Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek), Dr. W. J. Leyds.
Leyds served under President Kruger as State Secretary of the Transvaal from 1 May 1889 to 31 May 1898 and during the Anglo-Boer War he was the Republic's special envoy and minister plenipotentiary (from 1898 to 1902) in Brussels. Jan Smuts described Leyds as the most significant figure in the history of Transvaal, second only to Kruger.
A unique document in that it is accompanied by the original signed document dated 1892 confirming the removal of Bartels from the Amsterdam Population Register to Zuid-Afrika, as part of the Third Emigration to the Transvaal (1881-1902) (refer Ploeger, Nederlanders in Transvaal, 1850-1950)
