1892 Kruger Pond D/S XF45 SANGS

The Double Shaft as this Pond is commonly known has two shafts on the wagon. The Voortrekker wagon had only a single shaft (disselboom) so two oxen either side of the shaft could be used. Also this pond had O.S. on the Shoulder of President Kruger which were the initials of Otto Schultz. The O.S. in Afrikaans means Ox.

This Pond was part of the first set of coins that were struck for the ZAR government. They were stuck by the Prussian Mint in Berlin. The errors in the Double Shaft Pond were multiple.

The double shaft should have been a single shaft.

The wheels of the wagon should have been smaller at the front.

The wagon was symbolic to the Burghers and they were furious. It is said it nearly cost President Paul Kruger the election. The Pond coins which had not been released were melted down.
