On the 8th March, 1902, Joseph Chamberlain, Secretary for the Colonies, informed the High Commissioner for South Africa, Lord Milner, that His Majesty’s Government had reached agreement to transfer the districts of Vryheid and part of the district of Wakkerstroom to the Colony of Natal, together with part of the external debt of the Transvaal, whilst not acceding to Natal’s request for the transfer of parts of the Harrismith and Vrede Districts of the Orange River Colony. On the 1st May 1902, the Legislative Assembly of Natal indicated its unanimous agreement, and the former Transvaal districts were incorporated into Natal by Proclamation on the 27th January 1903.

The hamlet of Gommamaan in the Vryheid District was one of the post offices now incorporated in Natal. The first postal agent had opened there in 1893 and operated until being closed in the Anglo-Boer War – only to reopen situated in Natal! The cover above was posted at Gommamaan on 10 February 1901 and is also an example of the postal use of Transvaal revenue stamps (here overprinted “V.R.I.”).
