Ds Nicolaas (Nico) Hofmeyr was 'n NG predikant, koerantredakteur, dosent aan die Pretoria Normaalkollege, inspekteur van skole in die Transvaal en Afrikaanse skrywer. Met die uitbreek van die Anglo-Boereoorlog (1899-1902) gaan hy saam met die Boeremagte op kommando met die doel om die geskiedenis van die oorlog te beskryf. Saam met die skilder Frans Oerder besoek hy talle gevegsfronte.
Met hoofstukke oor onder meer: Oorlog of Vrede?; Te Wapen!; Elandslaagte; De Boeren om Ladysmith; De Slag van Modderspruit en Nicholson's Nek; Klein Majuba; Naar de Tugela; Naar Kimberley; De Slag van Magersfontein; Majuba gewroken!
