Hardcover, this English translation (from Polish) first published by Michael Joseph in 1958. The paper jacket is clipped, and has several small tears and some probable insect damage, and is rubbed and worn. The boards are clean, square and unmarked, as are all the pages. A novel of Warsaw's underworld, that due to paper shortages at the time for months "was obtainable only in the Warsaw 'black market'", yet was even read by Josef Cyrankiewicz, the then Prime Minister of Poland.
