Q: are the syringe necessary for item to work properly?
A: yes, (syringe is included in the package) if you want to adjust the speed. A syringe is needed to remove the air bubbles or add air. Just follow the instructions and if you need more help, go to Youtube and find a well-explained video regarding how to add/extract air using a syringe, you can calibrate the bubbles to get a better picture.
Q: glass or plastic window?
A: the sides and base are plastic, the front is glass. It creates layers that look like painted hilly and mountainous landscapes. Of course you get a different scene each time you flip it. Fun to watch the sand fall. Takes several seconds to several minutes for sand to completely fall, depending on how the sand is situated and how much you bump it. With no interference from you, it usually takes a couple minutes if the air bubbles don't get in the way too much.
