Zwelethu Mthethwa " Altered Spaces"
Zwelethu Mthethwa presents Altered Spaces, a look into the contemporary urban landscape. Mthethwa is known for his use of bright and sometimes garish colour in both his pastel and photographic pieces. Although in Altered Spaces the artist moves away from themes explored in previous work such as the complexities inherent in township life, he continues to employ his trademark use of colour where vibrant hues create an atmosphere of cheer and optimism with clashing darker undertones to suggest a harsher reality beneath the surface.
Billboards in a given area become landmarks for the people moving through that area and so work their way into our mental landscapes.
