Some 80 delightful old Scottish stories about broken hearts and revenge, heroines and cripples, a minister's daughter and the breaking of a bride's china.

This series of Tales, now famous, was begun by John Mackay Wilson (15 August 1804 - 2 October 1835), originally a printer. Wilson was born in Tweedmouth, on the border between Scotland and England. Whilst editor of the Berwick Advertiser, Wilson began publishing local stories in 1834. Their popularity led to him reprinting and extending them. Although he died within a year, with his obituary published in issue 49, the Tales ran to 312 editions, in all carrying 485 tales. After his death the Tales continued under the editorship of others. With beautiful wood-engravings.

No publication date in this volume. Date 1889 written in pencil underneath name of a previous owner on back paste-down. Published by William Mackenzie, London, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Condition: Good for its age. Pages browned and slightly wrinkled, possibly due to damp. Cover frayed at edges.
