Letters from the Cape. Edited by John Purves

"Capetown is rather pretty, but beyond words untidy and out of repair. I shall migrate up country to a Dutch village. Mrs. J, who is Dutch herself, tells me that one may board in a Dutch farm-house very cheaply, and with great comfort (of course eating with the family), and that they will drive you about the country and tend your horses for nothing, if you are friendly, and dont treat them with Engelsche hoog-moedigheid."

Letters From The Cape is a collection of letters written by Lady Lucie Duff Gordon, a British aristocrat, during her stay in Cape Town. She travelled in 1861 to South Africa for health reasons after she had contracted tuberculosis. Her letters provide a fascinating insight into life in the colony during the mid-19th century. She describes her journey by boat to the Cape, her impressions of the colony, and her daily life there. She writes about the natural beauty of the region, the people she meets, and the customs and traditions of the local population.

First edition in this format published in 1921 Humphrey Milford, London.

Condition: Good for it's age. Pages lightly tanned.
