Child's wooden and metal toy doll sledge, Circa 1850-1880 Ref. W-20
Description: Child's toy doll sledge showing a carved woman figurehead at front of sledge, flanked by two hounds with a seat for a doll behind and a running board at the back. Iron over wooden runners with ornate iron supports holding the main body. Painted sides and carved back to the seat.

Date: Thought to be from the 1850 -1880 era
History: The sledge was originally purchased in the Netherlands as a Dutch doll's sledge. However, it appears that it is more likely to have been from Russia. Similar adult sledges from Russia show a marked similarity. Dogs were used in Russia, not only as companionship, but for keeping the owner warm. Smaller dogs were used to warm beds at night.
Marks/Observations: The sledge has been restored at some date. The metal pieces all appear to be hand-forged. The woodwork is all hand-made as is the carving of the lady and her two dogs.
Condition: In good condition, all pieces remain intact with no damage.All metal pieces secured with iron rivits The sledge is constructed of solid wood.
