An EXCELLENT example of a RARE, 1908/1909 Silver British Somaliland Campaign Medal. This piece appears to be in a VF/F state , with detailed Relief on obverse & reverse. Suspender is no longer present. Evidence of handling/ age-related wear is visible on surface. Medal appears to have been fashioned into a Brooch at some point in time. Disk is clearly named to recipient and ship.
The H.M.S Proserpine of the Royal Navy, was a light Cruiser performing patrolling duties off the coast of Somaliland and the Gulf of Aden. Sailors stationed upon the ship , referred to the Cruiser as the 'Proper Swine' throughout the duration of the campaign. All operations were carried out in conjunction with the Kingdom of Italy , in an effort to end piracy in the region and establish Protectorates.
