Maker: Jingdezhen, China
Date: Estimated date 1730 - 1770
History: These brown glazed porcelain plates showing coloured enamel decoration in white panels were made primarily at Jingdezhen in the Jiangxi province of China. They were known as Batavian ware as they were usually transported from Batavia in Indonesia by the Dutch East India Company. This type of porcelain , also known as Chinese Export Porcelain, was very much in demand in Europe, especially the Netherlands and Sweden as well as being exported to America.
Description: A central large cartouche of gilded flowers and a lake scene is found surrounded by eight smaller ones on the rim, four depicting water scenes, four with floral decorations and gilded.
Condition: The plate has a very old repair which appears to be by the Japanese Kintsugi method. This is a very old traditional method of repairing porcelain dating back to the 16th Century, using a natural lacquer and then decorating the repair in gold or silver leaf. The art of Kintsugi is to show the beauty within the imperfection. It is an aesthetic sense unique to Japan that finds spiritual richness in simplicity.
Some wear on the inside of the plate where the brown glaze has worn away. No chips nor scratches noted. Some of the gilding is slightly worn
