Antique 9ct Gold and Garnet Topped Doublet Screw-on Earrings
The antique 9ct yellow gold earrings are screw-on and are each set with a blue, round-cut, garnet topped doublet (GTD) (approximately 5mm diameter circa 0.5ct each) set in a flower-shaped -surround consisting of six gold petals each. The earrings are marked 9ct on the screwheads.
A GTD is a type of artificially assembled gem composed in two sections. In this case the top section is garnet and the bottom section is blue glass. This GTD simulates blue sapphire. This type of gem was first produced round 1850 when it was found that molten glass would adhere to garnet. It became a popular imitation of gems of many colours as the colour of the glass is the only colour that is actually seen. GTDs were used into the early years of the 20th Century, when they were generally replaced by the use of synthetic stones.
