The war comes to a standstill, and we see the causes and results of this extraordinary occurence through a diverse group of characters - the Marshall of the Allied Armies, French and German Generals, a yound English aviator, a company runner who has already made an abortive protest against the war, an American negro, the Corporal, his twelve followers and his women folk."
