Souvenir Programme of the Alhambra Theatre Cape Town (1929)

Published by Alhambra Theatre, circa 1929, drawings by William Timlin,22.8 cms x 28 cms,  some minor loss due to insects (historic} to margins of six pages, otherwise condition: good.

The Alhambra Bioscope, also known as the Alhambra Theatre, was a theatre that opened on Riebeek Street, Cape Town, South Africa in 1929.The Alhambra was built in 1928 for Harry Stodel's African Consolidated Theatres. It was called South Africa's best "atmospheric theatre." It had a Wurlitzer theatre organ that could produce many sound effects. It opened in 1929. Plays and musicals were also presented for four decades in the theatre. Among the entertainers to perform here were Marlene Dietrich, Nellie du Toit,[5] Angelo Gobbato, and Phyllis Spira. The only Afrikaans language theatre company to perform here, according to André Huguenet, was his company with its production of Is Jy n Bokryer? in the 1940s.
In this programme. Carl Laemmle, co-founder and owner of Universal Pictures sends his best wishes. Laemmle  is regarded as one of the most important of the early film pioneers.
The drawings are by William Timlin , architect and illustrator. Timlin worked on "The Ship that Sailed to Mars". This book has since become a fantasy classic. The Dictionary of 20th Century British Book Illustrators describes the book as a masterpiece and "the most original and beautiful children's book of the 1920s".

The Alhambra closed in January 1972 and was sold in 1974 and demolished the same year.
