ANTIQUE 1840S-1880S HANDMADE RIVETED COPPER JAM PAN WITH HANDLES - LARGE 33CM DIAMETER
THIS IS AN ANTIQUE HANDMADE COPPER JAM PAN. IT HAS HANDMADE HANDLES WITH MACHINE MADE RIVETS THAT WERE CLEARLY HAND HAMMERED INTO THE HANDLES. THIS INDICATES THAT THIS COPPER PAN WAS MOST PROPABLY MADE BETWEEN 1840 (WHEN MACHINE RIVETS STARTED TO BE MADE) AND 1880 (WHEN MACHINE MADE HANDLES STARTED TO BE MADE).
WITH A HAMMERED FINISH TO THE COPPER AND A LOVELY THICK COPPER OVER METAL ROD ROLLED RIM. LARGE 40CM WIDE FROM HANDLE TO HANDLE AND HEAVY 1,4KG. CLEARLY HANDMADE AND OF ANTIQUE AGE. IT HAS PLENTY OF CHARACTER WITH SOME TARNISH AND PATINA.
CLEARLY HANDMADE: MACHINE RIVETS USED ON HANDMADE HANDLES To attach the iron or brass handles to copper vessels rivets were used for making strong joints. Rivets could be made from a variety of materials, but the most common ones are made of copper. These would be carefully hammered into a round shape to fit the hole. Light hammer marks can often be seen on the surface of the rivet and are a good way of telling modern and antique kitchenware apart. BEFORE 1840 COPPERSMITHS MAINLY USED HANDMADE RIVETS AND HANDMADE HANDLES. The first rivet-making machine was patented in 1836. It would follow that there would be a transition period when coppersmiths used machine rivets but still hammered them into place by hand. In support of this we see on our copper jam pan: Rounded factory heads that protrude slightly from the pan walls Standardized rivet diameters that are smaller than rivets of the handmade era Shop heads with hammer strike marks AFTER 1880 THEY STARTED TO USE MACHINEMADE HANDLES. THE CLEAR SIGN OF MACHINE RIVETS THAT WAS HAND HAMMERED MEANS THIS ITEM WAS MOST PROPABLY MADE BETWEEN 1840 AND 1880.
