Armscor - South Africa's Arms Merchant (0080367097)
Published by Brassey's 1989 - author: James P McWilliams - hard cover - 199 pages - pre-owned - condition: very good
This book examines the story of the birth and growth of Armscor (the Armaments Corporation of South Africa Limited, established in 1977, after an amalgamation of the Armaments Production Board and the old Armscor) and the effects of the United Nations arms embargo of 1977 upon the Republic of South Africa. It shows how, through Armscor, South Africa has built up a domestic armaments industry which has not only made the country virtually self-sufficient in weapons development and production but has also become a powerful element of the international arms market. The author reveals how the effect of the arms embargo has been almost entirely counterproductive, and how unrealistic is the talk of the comprehensive sanctions in the light of the dependence of all the neighbouring South African countries upon the Republic for vital sources and services.
