With graceful, arching fronds and a soft, natural shape, they're perfect for corners or large containers. These palms are also excellent air purifiers and are safe for pets, making them a stylish and practical indoor choice.
Commonly known as: Bamboo Palm or Areca Palm
Botanical name: Dypsis lutescens
The Bamboo Palm is one of the most popular indoor palmsand for good reason. With its feathery, arching fronds and clustered cane-like stems, it creates an easy-going, resort-style atmosphere without requiring a resort-sized effort to keep it alive. These palms are excellent at filtering indoor air and, unlike many others, are non-toxic to pets. They work beautifully in well-lit lounges, offices, or hallways and lend an elegant, calming presence without overwhelming a room.
Light:
Bamboo Palms love bright, indirect light. A spot near a curtained window is perfect. They'll tolerate slightly lower light, but the fronds may grow thinner and sparser. Avoid direct sunlightit can bleach or burn the leaves.
💧 Water:
Keep the soil evenly moist but never soggy. Water when the top 34 cm of soil feels dry. In warmer months, this could be once a week or more. During winter, cut back and allow the soil to dry out a little more between waterings.
🌱 Soil:
Choose a well-draining, moisture-retentive mix. For best results, use our Aroid Mix, or blend Barks Unlimited Potting Soil with added Perlite to help with aeration and drainage.
🌡 Temperature & Humidity:
These tropical plants do best in temperatures between 1826°C. They love humiditymist them regularly or group them near other plants to increase moisture levels. You can also stand the pot on a tray of pebbles and water (without letting the base of the pot sit in water).
🌿 Fertiliser:
Feed monthly in spring and summer using a controlled release fertiliser or a balanced organic fertiliser. Avoid feeding in winter.
🪴 Repotting:
Repot every 23 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. These palms like a slightly snug pot, so only increase by one size at a time. When repotting, it helps to mix in Bark Chips for better drainage.
🐛 Pests:
Look out for spider mites or scale insects, especially in dry conditions. If needed, treat with insecticidal spray and increase humidity to prevent recurrence.
Maintenance:
Remove any yellowing or dry fronds at the base. Wipe leaves gently with a damp cloth to keep dust off and help the plant breathe. Avoid cutting into the green parts of the stem, as this can damage the plant.
