A lush, leafy classic for patios or bright spots indoors. The Sword Fern's soft, arching fronds add instant greenery to any space.
Commonly known as : Sword FernĀ
Botanical Name: Nephrolepsis Obliterata
The Sword Fern has been a firm favourite in homes and gardens for generations and for good reason. With its graceful, arching fronds and dense, vibrant green foliage, this plant effortlessly fills a space with lush texture. Whether placed in a hanging basket, on a shelf, or under a shady tree on the patio, it brings a touch of classic charm wherever it lives.
This fern thrives in bright, indirect light and loves a bit of extra humidity, although you don't need a tropical hothouse to keep it happy. Regular misting or placing it near other plants helps, but daily watering and a good-quality potting mix will do most of the work.
Sword Ferns grow well indoors or outdoors in a protected, semi-shaded spot. They're particularly striking in hanging planters, where their fronds can cascade beautifully. The soft foliage is not only easy on the eyes but also known to be an effective air purifier, making it a practical addition to your home.
When well cared for, this fern will reward you with fresh, green growth and full, bushy form. Just remember they're not too fond of dry air or direct sun. If fronds start browning, it's often a sign that they're thirsty or need a bit more humidity.
A classic for good reason no plant collection feels quite complete without a Sword Fern.
💡 Light:
Prefers bright, indirect light. It will tolerate light shade but avoid harsh, direct sun which can scorch the fronds.
💧 Water:
Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water daily during hot weather or if the indoor air is dry.
🌱 Soil & Repotting:
For optimal drainage and healthy roots, you can use our premixed Aroid Mix, or you can create your own potting mix using Barks Unlimited Potting Soil combined with Perlite. When repotting, add a few Bark Chips for extra aeration.
🌸 Fertiliser:
Feed with a balanced, controlled-release fertiliser during spring and summer. You can also use an organic fertiliser monthly to encourage lush growth.
🐛 Pests:
Generally pest-free, but check for mealybugs and aphids. Treat with a mild insecticidal spray if needed.
Maintenance:
Remove any brown or damaged fronds regularly to keep the plant looking its best. Mist the fronds to boost humidity during dry months.
