His first collection of short stories, Mafikeng Road, has already assumed the stature of a South African classic and is together with the posthumous collection, Unto Dust, cherished by all admirers of great humorous writing. Of these stories, most of which are narrated by oom Schalk Lourens, the simple old Boer from the Marico District, who is really the embodiment of sly ambiguity. This volume includes four hitherto unpublished Schalk Lourens stories as well as a selection from the above two highly praised collections. It also contains extracts from Cold Stone Jug, Bosmans witty and often poignant account of life in a South African prison in the twenties, and a number of his essays from a Cask of Jeripigo. Herman Charles Bosman is widely regarded as South Africa's greatest short-story writer. He studied the works of Edgar Allan Poe and Mark Twain and developed a style emphasizing the use of satire. He was born at Kuilsrivier, near Cape Town. While still young, his family moved to Johannesburg where he went to school at Jeppe Boys High School in Kensington. He was a contributor to the school magazine. When he was 16, he started writing amusing short stories for the Sunday Times. Condition: Good, all pages and binding intact, no loose pages.
