This is a heavy (I believe to be) Model 1840 cavalry sword made by W. Clauberg Solingen Germany, also called Old Wristbreaker.
These swords were exported to America and used by the Confederacy or the Union army or militia during the Civil War.
On the ricasso is the name W. Clauberg Solingen
The sword has a bronze hilt and a wood/leather and wire grip.
The sword has a very unusual steel scabbard with a number on it, looks to be 3959.
Leather cushion is present and in very good condition.
One suspension ring on scabbard.
The sword and scabbard are in a good condition
see photos as they form part of the item description.
