The mountain men and women of the Australian Alps are a special kind of people.  They have come to grips with a challenging, hostile environment and have developed as rugged and resilient individuals.  Self-sufficient even today, their stories of the mountain pioneers of an era not so long ago make fascinating reading.

The Bogong High Plains of Victoria first became of interest to European settlers as a place to graze stock when the summer sun scorched the lowland plains.  Then gold was discovered, and many of the cattlemen found employment in looking after the needs of the gold seekers and miners.  Hydro-electric schemes were surveyed and became a reality.  Skiing was tried by some as a mode of transport and a sport in the long winter, and eventually opened up the mountain areas to the city sporting public.  But through the changes, the people of the high country have remained as characters in their own right.

The authors have interviewed many of the old-timers and their descendents and researched the scanty literature and in this highly readable book present first-hand accounts of early life in the high country.

Soft cover, good condition.  145 pages, all intact.
