A WW2 ERA 1939 MARKED COLCOUGH ENGLAND SIDEPLATE AND SAUCER IN HARLEQUIN BALLET LEMON YELLOW PATTERN

A WORLD WAR 2 ERA (1939-1945) COLCLOUGH CHINA SAUCER AND SQUARISH SIDEPLATE. IN THE HARLEQUIN BALLET SOFT PASTEL LEMON YELLOW PATTERN WITH WHITE BANDED BASE AND WAVY SCALLOPED GOLD GILDED RIMS.

The backstamp shows this particular set was produced from 1939-1945. Colclough called this the Harlequin (word harlequin describes something that has many different colours) Ballet pattern and produced this particular range in many different colours over the next few decades. The series with the backstamp 1939-1945 came in five pastel (soft) colours that I have seen: Soft Pink, Soft Blue, Soft Grey, Soft Green and a soft pastel Lemon Yellow. Partly due to World War 2 limitations in materials it has a classic look with clean lines and minimal graphics.

HARLEQUIN PATTERN: TRUE TO ITS NAME HARLEQUIN WHICH DESCRIBES SOMETHING THAT HAS MANY DIFFERENT COLOURS COLCLOUGH PRODUCED THIS SERIES IN MANY DIFFERENT COLOURS FROM THE 1940S TO 1966. THE COLOURS OF THE HARLEQUIN SERIES WAS MORE INTENSE WITH A BRIGHT GREEN, CYAN BLUE, CANARIE YELLOW AND MORE.

HARLEQUIN BALLET PATTERN: Similar to the Harlequin pattern it was produced in many different colours between 1930s and 1966. However the colours were not all over the piece and each item has a white banded base or center giving it a tip toed look of a ballet dancer. The Harlequin Ballet series were produced in the pastel softer colours as far as I can tell only before World War 2 and in the more vivid intense colours after the war into the 1960s.

They on their turn became part of the Ridgways Group in 1955 and part of the Royal Doulton group in 1972. Manufacturing under the Colclough & Booths name ceased in 1996.
