First Bull Run The nation wakes to war

Bull Run was the first full-scale battle of the Civil War. The fierce fight there forced both the North and South to face the sobering reality that the war would be long and bloody.

The battle was fought on July 21, 1861, in Prince William County, Virginia, just north of what is now the city of Manassas and about thirty miles west-southwest of Washington, D.C. The Union Army was slow in positioning themselves, allowing Confederate reinforcements time to arrive by rail.

An objective, exciting and heartbreaking account of what actually happened. Includes incisive glimpses into the mentality and military strategy of such Union and Confederate leaders.

A chronology of events, tactical maps, and action photographs and engravings.

Black & white illustrations
