Your 'Jester' Gladioli will thrive and flourish in the South African climate with just a little attention.

• Sunlight: Plant your corms in a spot that receives full sun at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily is ideal. This ensures the most prolific blooming and vibrant colours.

• Soil: 'Jester' prefers well-draining soil. A sandy loam enriched with some compost is perfect. Good drainage is crucial to prevent corm rot. If your soil is heavy clay, consider amending it with organic matter or planting in raised beds.

• Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, especially during dry spells and when the plants are actively growing and flowering. Water deeply once or twice a week, depending on the heat and rainfall. Avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of fungal issues.

• Planting Time: In South Africa, the ideal time to plant your 'Jester' corms is from early Spring (September), after the last threat of frost, right through to December for a continuous display of blooms throughout Summer.

Position and soil
Gladioli look magnificent towards the back of a mixed perennial border. Groups of about 25 look best, although groups of 10 in single colours also make a bold statement. The soil should first be loosened to a depth of 20 cm. Hybrid gladioli like a compost-rich soil mix and need a full sun position to thrive. If they are planted where wind is a problem, they will need staking.

Further Care
Watering is very important and you must not allow the sub-soil to dry out. If you notice any harmful insects or fungal rust then you can treat it by spraying with an appropriate fungal spray.
