First edition (1960); 47pp. APB, Johannesburg & Cape Town.

Richly illustrated.

'In recent years there has been an increasing number of books devoted to the geographical, historical, political and cultural aspects of South Africa and particularly of Cape Town. This books attempts to reveal the Cape Province in a new and possibly novel way. It is neither a historic nor a guide-book, neither a factual document nor a cultural survey. It attempts to convey something of the intrinsic wonder of the country, the moods, atmosphere and other qualities underlying the obvious. Being essentially a painter of mood, memory and the imagination, the drawings are mostly a mergence of several aspects, manipulated to intensify what was found most arresting and, in conjunction with the text, attempt to convey the very feel of the country'. (Johannes Meintjes, 1960).

This publication is most certainly one of Meintjes' rarest books and is richly illustrated.

Very rare and highly sought-after Africana. A fascinating insight into the life and times as well as artistic output of the young and very famous South African artist Johannes Meintjes after the Second World War.

The book itself is in a reasonably good condition considering the publication date of 1960, although some foxing. It is without a dust jacket and has an inscription (gift note dated Christmas 1961) on the first page. As can be expected, normal signs of age-related wear throughout. (Please enquire if you require more information and/or photographs).

Postage & Packaging: R140 (courier).

SKETCHES PUBLISHED IN THE BOOK

Johannes Meintjes was a painter that enjoyed tremendous public support for his art since early age and also received international acclaim as an author later on.

The fame he enjoyed as a 21 year old artist is unequalled in the South African history of art.

Meintjes died in 1980 and had established himself as a major South African painter and writer. He had painted more than a thousand canvases, produced dozens of sculptures and exhibited in all South Africa's major galleries.

Apart from numerous articles and smaller literary works, he had published 35 books, amongst them internationally authoritative works on South African history.

The correct spelling of his surname is 'Johannes Meintjes' (and not 'Johannes Meintjies')

Some of Meintjes' books are of historical GLBTQ interest as they are considered to be early examples of South African gay writing.
