Van Niekerk is 'n skrywer wat in sy werk teruggevind kan word. Die feit dat hy vir jare met duiwe geboer het en 'n duiwerubriek vir 'n koerant behartig het, moes vanselfsprekend 'n rol gespeel het by die skryf van Skrik kom huis toe, net soos sy verknogtheid aan die aarde weerspieel word in Die Haasvanger, maar miskien nog meer so in Karel Kousop.Die verhaal handel oor 'n Boesmanseun wat by 'nblanke gesin grootword. Die verhaal word aangebied deur die perspektief van sy blanke maat, Gerrit, saam met wie hy grootword, maar soos die titel reeds aandui, is dit Karel, die Boesmanseuntjie se verhaal. Gesinsverhoudings is weer belangrik, hier veral Karel se gebondenheid met sy ouers. Daar is die verlange na sy ma, wat hy wel nie direk wil erken nie, maar wat gesuggereer word omdat hy met sy eerste geld vir haar 'n present wil koop.Dit spreek ook uit die feit dat hy wil wraak neem op 'n kind wat hy dink sy ma gevloek het. Aan die ander kant is daar sy 'reddelose maar aangrypende verbondenheid aan sy pa' (Steenberg 1986:19). Die het uit die leer gedros om 'n moord te pleeg en word nou gesoek. Ten spyte dat hy dit oenskynlik goed het waar hy nou is, wil Karel by sy pa wees en loop hy weg sodra hy 'n kans kry.
