KARIBA The Struggle with the River God ~ Frank Clements

Medium hard cover
Good condition but no dust jacket

Building a dam in Southern Rhodesia is a tremendous undertaking which certainly deserves everyone's admiration, but Mr. Clements hasn't succeeded in making a particularly interesting book out of the struggle. The many difficulties -- with nature and with the natives -- are described in orderly fashion. However, the few attempts to dramatize these problems in terms of the people involved are not very satisfactory. A climatic chapter about ""Operation Noah"" -- the rescuing of animals trapped in a man-made lake -- has great appeal, although the most interesting part of this section revolves about the fact that there were more observers and journalists on the scene than rescuers taking part in the operation. A conscientious job with many photographs and two maps, but definitely only for those with a special, special interest. (Kirkus Reviews)
