Late Georgian Chinoiserie 'Cream Jug' Circa 1810-1825 Ref.OCT98
On offer above is this superb Chinoiserie patterned, late Georgian 'Cream Jug' dated around the 1810-1825 era.
No maker's name, but this is typical as few pieces were marked at this time. However, it is likely to be either Hilditch or New Hall Potteries, both of Staffordshire, England. Both these firms had very similar designs. Hilditch and Son were a short lived company (1822-1830) whilst New Hall lasted from 1781-1835.
The Chinoiserie patterns, popular during the 1780 - 1800's, would have been based on early Chinese designs.
The jug shows a distinct type of English filled-in or clobbered transfer on a fine translucent white porcelain pearlware which appeared for a brief period in 1820s during the reign of George IV. It is a polychrome transfer decoration of four Oriental persons with, what appears to be, a fishing net. In the background, sailing on a yellow river, we find a small boat. In the background, against a hill, are palm trees and a thatched shelter. The hand-painting (or clobbering) was often done by children from the age of eight years and up, child labour being extensive at this time in Britain. The jug would have been glazed with a transfer outline in dark brown, then hand-coloured and re-glazed at a much lower temperature as the paints used in those times would not take high temperatures.
There were approximately 17 small companies operating at this time, manufacturing predominantly jugs, mugs and cups. Sadly, there appears to be little product-related documentation left from any of these relatively small, obscure manufacturers, such as pattern books or product lists with recognizable descriptions.
The jug stands 10.5 cm high to the top of its handle and is 13.5 cm in length with a width of nearly 8cm.
In very good condition with no cracks, chips or any noticeable lack of paint, the only distinguishing mark is a number '26' found written in red on the base which may have been the pattern number. The glazing is fairly thick and small bubbles and blow-holes can be seen, typical of early glazing techniques. At the bottom of the jug, we find numerous small black spots, showing that this piece was coal fired, coal dust being the curse of the potters at this time.
This is a genuine antique. Please remember the classification of an 'antique' is that it should be 100 years old, OR MORE. There are many articles being offered as 'antiques' when, clearly, they are not.
