Kort na die Tweede Wereldoorlog, op 24 November 1949, kom sy uit Duitsland in Suid-Afrika aan om in die eg verbind te word met ene Christiaan Hofmeyr. By haar het sy n digbundel van Rilke en twee pakkies briewe. Die huwelik met Christiaan verteenwoordig n keerpunt in Utte se lewe, nie net omdat sy Duitsland en die oorblywende lede van haar familie daar agterlaat nie, maar ook omdat dit die einde beteken van haar soektog na haar geliefde Felix, n dokter wat sy hartstogtelik lief gekry het tydens die oorlog terwyl sy as verpleegster op die slagveld gewerk het. Weens die soort omstandighede wat deur oorlog teweeg gebring word, is Utte sonder waarskuwing wreed van Felix geskei. Jare later ontdek sy dat haar eie vader n aandeel gehad het in die feit dat sy na die oorlog nooit weer van Felix gehoor het nie. Uit die vertelling kom n mens weer duidelik onder die indruk van die verwoesting wat die oorlog gesaai het in die lewens van almal wat daarby betrokke was.
