When you need some help driving a lot of LEDs, the MAX7219 is your best friend. The annoying thing about multiplexing is that you need to constantly refresh the display to keep the image stable. The Max7219 does all the multiplexing for you. This nice breakout uses four 8x8 Dot Matrix displays which gives you a 32 x 8 Dot matrix display.

The MAX7219 Dot Led Matrix Module is a serial input common-cathode driver that interfaces microcontrollers to LED matrixes. All common microcontrollers can be connected to this module by using a 4-wire serial interface. Each output can be addressed without refreshing the entire display.
