Metropolis Movie Poster by Boris Bilinsky, Fritz Lang Movies
This stunning Metropolis French Film Poster was meticulously crafted by the Russian-born designer and artist Boris Bilinsky. The son of a Russian officer, Bilinsky emigrated to Germany in 1920 where he worked in theatre before travelling to Paris in 1923. He studied painting under the tutelage of Léon Bakst and started his career as a set and costume designer. In 1924 he designed the extravagant costumes for Jean Epsteins Le Lion des Mogols and a series of exquisite designs for Alexander Volkoffs film Casanova which helped make his name.
By 1927, Bilinsky had already become a well-known, reputable, and prolific cinema poster artist. It was at this time that Bilinsky was commissioned by the French film distribution company LAlliance Cinématographique Européenne (ACE) to create promotional materials for the release of Fritz Langs Metropolis. ACE, acting as the agent for the German film company UFA, aimed to launch the movie in France in October, following its premiere in Germany earlier that year. A diverse array of promotional items, such as posters, books, postcards, programs, newspaper ads, and magazine spreads, was produced by French artists. These materials began circulating in France shortly after the German premiere and continued throughout 1927 and into 1928. Bilinskys Metropolis work incorporated no less than five film posters, a photomontage, and a press book. His posters are among the most visually striking and artistically intriguing pieces of promotional artwork associated with Langs utopian, industrial gothic film.
