This book originated from papers presented at an international conference organised by Arewa House of the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria in collaboration with Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto ana Bayero University Kano. Held in March 2003 to mark the centenary of the British conquest of the area that later became known as Northern Nigeria, the aim of the conference was neither to commemorate the defeat of indigenous polities nor celebrate British ascendancy. Rather, it examined the variegated social, political and economic transformations that occurred since 1903. Covering a vast area and long period, the book does not claim to present a comprehensive account. Instead, it offers a thematic analysis of some of the major issues ranging from indigenous reactions to British overrule, the establishment of colonial rule and decolonization, changes in economic practices to contemporary challenges of language policy, urbanisation and inter-group relations. Thirty scholars from Nigeria, other parts of Africa and Europe contributed to this book, making it a compelling addition to the genre of literature on the history and contemporary challenges facing Africas most populous nation.
