Pot size 14CM
Commonly known as : Philodendron Birkin
The Philodendron Birkin is a striking self-heading (non-climbing) variety known for its bold contrast and painterly leaves. Each one unfurls with a unique mix of creamy-white striping over deep greensome leaves are more variegated than others, which only adds to its appeal. Over time, the plant forms a tidy, upright clump that keeps its shape beautifully and doesn't take up too much space.
A natural mutation of the Philodendron Rojo Congo, Birkin gained popularity for its spontaneous and unpredictable variegation. It's a great choice for collectors and beginners alikelow-maintenance but definitely eye-catching.
Light requirements:
Bright, indirect light is ideal. Too much direct sun can scorch the lighter parts of the leaves, while too little light may cause the variegation to fade. It's happiest near a window with filtered light or under a grow light.
💧 Watering:
Allow the top 35cm of soil to dry out before watering. Water thoroughly, then let excess drain awayBirkin doesn't enjoy soggy soil. In winter, water less frequently.
🌡 Humidity & Temperature:
Average household humidity is usually fine, but it'll appreciate a little boost in drier seasons. A light misting now and then helps. Keep it between 1826°C and away from heaters or cold draughts.
🪴 Potting mix:
For optimal drainage and healthy roots, you can use our premixed Aroid Mix, or you can create your own potting mix using Barks Unlimited Potting Soil combined with Perlite and a handful of Bark Chips. Repot every 12 years, preferably in spring.
🌱 Feeding:
Feed monthly during the warmer months with a controlled release fertiliser or gentle organic fertiliser. Skip feeding in winter.
🐛 Pests & Problems:
Generally pest-free, though mealybugs or aphids may appear if conditions are poor. Wipe the leaves down now and then and treat with insecticidal spray if needed. Yellowing leaves often point to overwatering or poor drainage.
Pruning & propagation:
Minimal pruning is needed. You can remove old or damaged leaves at the base. Propagation is trickier with Birkin, as it grows from a central stem and doesn't branch easilybut experienced growers can divide it from the base when mature.
