Justin Rousseau het sy stiefsuster, Karina, lief al jare lank. Maar hy is maar net Savarin, die spog-wynplaas, se bestuurder, en Karina is die erfgenaam. Karina is hewig ontsteld oor Stefan en Anet Marquard se koms na haar geboortegrond, en sy soek vertroosting en onderskraging by Justin. So kry hy die geleentheid om nader aan haar te kom. Tog is daar skanse tussen hulle. Karina vrees dat Grethe Ungerer, haar pa se Duitse vrou wat tydens die Tweede Wereldoorlog spoorloos verdwyn het, net soos haar kind die aanval op Brussel oorleef het. En as sy nog leef, was Dawid nooit wettiglik met Helené, Karina se ma, getroud nie, en dan is Karina buite die eg gebore.

Boonop lyk dit asof Justin meer in Janet belang stel as wat nodig is.
