A TRIO OF 12-SIDED (DODECAGON) PLATES BY ROYAL DOULTON ENGLAND. A DINNER PLATE 25CM WIDE, A DESERT PLATE 21CM WIDE AND A SANDWICH PLATE 18CM WIDE. IN VERY GOOD VINTAGE CONDITION WITH NO CHIPS NO CRACKS AND ARTWORK STILL BRIGHT. WITH THE RARE PARTLY HAND PAINTED DRAYCOT PATTERN D4635 FIRST INTRODUCED IN 1926. D PATTERN NUMBERS WAS USED FOR EARTHENWARE BETWEEN 1899 AND 1964.
THIS MAGNIFICENT AND RARE ANTIQUE ROYAL DOULTON OF ENGLAND PORCELAIN "DRAYCOT" SERIES (D4635) OF PLATES WAS MANUFACTURED SOMETIME BETWEEN 1926 AND 1964 AND MEASURES 25-18CM WIDE AND 2CM HIGH.
IT HAS A GREY TRANSFER PATTERN WITH SPLASHES OF CLEAR HANDPAINTED LEAVES AND FLOWERS. IN THE GLORY DAYS OF ENGLISH POTTERY MANY ITEMS WERE HANDPAINTED IN PART WHICH WAS A COSTLY AND TIME CONSUMING PROCESS. IT IS RARELY SEEN NOW IN EUROPEAN POTTERY. PLEASE HAVE A LOOK AT THE PHOTOS AND APPRECIATE THE TIME AND EFFORT INVOLVED. DRAYCOT PATTERN (1926-19??): THIS PATTERN WAS FIRST INTRODUCED IN 1926 AND THERE WERE THREE COLOUR SCHEMES I COULD FIND IN THIS PATTERN. IT IS UNCLEAR WHEN IT WAS DISCONTINUED BUT THERE ARE NOT A LOT OF PIECES AVAILABLE ONLINE AND IT APPEARS RATHER RARE. THE RED, YELLOW AND BLUE FLOWERS ARE ALL INDIVIDUALLY HAND PAINTED AMONGST THE BLUE AND GREY TRANSFER PRINTED TWIG AND LEAVE FRAMEWORK. BEARS THE D4635 PATTERN NUMBER AND ARTIST'S BRUSH MARK TO THE REVERSE IN RED.
CONDITION: NO CHIPS. NO CRACKS. ARTWORK BRIGHT AND BEAUTIFUL. IN VERY GOOD VINTAGE CONDITION.
ROYAL DOULTON: In 1899 the Doulton studio recruited a young designer by the name of Charles Noke. He is now regarded as the brainchild behind Royal Doulton seriesware, a range of products were standard blank pottery shapes (everything from plates to jugs, bowls to vases and teapots) could be decorated with a consistent theme. Production continued at the Lambeth factory until 1956, after which Doulton concentrated on their activities at Burslem. It has a 'family' of English brands, having merged with Minton in 1968, and gaining Royal Albert from the merger with AEP in 1971. And, in 2005, these historic names became part of the Waterford Wedgwood group. It is now part of WWRD Holdings Ltd. the name being an acronym for the main components of the business: Waterford Chrystal, Wedgwood and Royal Doulton.
MARKINGS: DISTINGUISHABLE ROYAL DOULTON TRADEMARK LOGO IN BLACK OR BROWN WITH THE FAMOUS INTERLOCKING DS, THE CROWN, THE LION, AND THE ROUNDEL. USED FROM 1930S ONWARDS UNTIL AROUND 1993. BEARS THE D4635 PATTERN NUMBER AND ARTIST'S BRUSH MARK TO THE REVERSE IN RED. Early 1930s to 1950s trademarks often include the capital letter "A" next to the crown and lion. D pattern numbers was used for earthenware between 1899 and 1964. Later 1960s pieces include, underneath the Royal Doulton stamp, the character name and D number a sequence of registration numbers.
