This item is a curved wood string dispenser 

Early 20th century 

Common usses would have been kitchen or even general store uses to keep string on hand for packaging or when roasting a meat role 

Also used in crafts that use string where the ball of string is placed inside and dispensed through the bras rivet on the top of the lid 

Very usefull item and in very good usable condition
