In these two volumes Captain A.T. Mahan of the United States Navy reflects in detail on the significance of naval warfare in the conflict fought between the United States and the United Kingdom with their respective allies, from June 1812 to February 1815. From the outbreak of war with Napoleonic France, Britain had enforced a naval blockade to choke off neutral trade to France, which the US contested as illegal under international law. To man the blockade, Britain pressed American merchant sailors into the Royal Navy. American sentiment grew increasingly hostile toward Britain, culminating in open battle. With reproductions of old photographs, maps and battle plans.
These volume were first published in 1905 by Sampson Low, Marston & Company, London. Condition: Good. Hinge loose at contents page of Volume I, but no loose pages. Some front and back pages in both volumes spotted, otherwise neat and clean. Navy blue cloth covers slightly worn. Gilded title on spine.
