Three young men, Robert and Willy from Berlin and Georg from Hamburg, get to know each other in the city that was still undivided at the time. Robert and Willy are unemployed, Georg, on the other hand, has a family at home and improves his meager life with one or the other crime. All three dream of a colossal break that will bring them big money, great freedom, great independence. And so one day Robert suggests breaking into a safe. When a former friend of Roberts, Else, turns up, the plan threatens to become obsolete. The young woman now lives with Willy, but is still quite interested in Robert.  But he makes it clear to her that she is in the past for him. Willy doesn't really want to believe Roberts' assertions and gets mad with jealousy. He is even ready to betray the dream of a big break and the subsequent wealth and anonymously gives the police a tip.    -   Robert and Georg have no idea of Willy's betrayal and pull through the break. When they stand in front of the safe, they are suddenly surrounded by police officers. The chief inspector Stern unexpectedly recognized Robert as the man who had once saved his life during the Second World War. He had been looking for him for a long time to express his gratitude to his savior....
